Martin Slaughter Stringfellow

Martin was born 5 Aril 1836, the second of three sons born to Robert Rittenhouse Stringfellow and Anne Pickett Stringfellow in Culpeper County, Virginia. He attended schools in Culpeper and helped on the family farm.
In 1860, he married Nellie Madison Willis or Orange County, VA. They eventually had two daughters and four sons.
He enlisted in the Army on 17 April 1861 as a private in the Montpelier Guards, which became Company A of the 13th Virginia Infantry. He was elected a lieutenant in 1862, and later, because of conspicuous gallantry and steadfast devotion to duty, he was promoted to the command of the brigade sharpshooters. Originally, the regiment was under A P Hill, but by early 1864, it was assigned to Pegram’s Brigade, Early’s Division, Ewell’s 2nd Corps, CSA.
After the war, he returned to the Cedar Mountain area of Culpeper County and returned to farming. Most of the children moved to Montana and Idaho. Martin eventually joined them. He was visiting his brother-in-law when he passed away 3 June 1909 at Montpelier Station, in Orange County, VA. He is buried at the Stringfellow Homestead Cemetery at The Retreat.
Both of his brothers also served in the CSA during the war. One, Captain Benjamin Franklin Stringfellow, was well documented in “Mercy Street”. The other, Sgt Robert Stanton Stringfellow, was wounded 2 May 1864 and was in a hospital 5 May 1864. Dylan comes though his line.
