David C Jarrett was the 2nd Great Grandfather of Jeffrey Michael Clayton
David C Jarrett was born to Nathaniel and Margaret Jarret on 1 January 1845 in rural Randolph County, North Carolina. He was one of 14 children. That area of the state was peaceful at that time, with forests and rolling open fields. The family probably farmed such things as tobacco, corn, and hay.
David enlisted in the Confederate Army on 1 April 1864 in Greensboro, NC. He enlisted into Co C, 46th NC Infantry Regiment. Company C was designated the “Randolph Rangers” and served under Captain Obed W Carr. His unit became part of Cook’s Brigade, Heth’s Division, A P Hill’s 3rd Corps, CSA. Five of his brothers also enlisted. Within a month of enlisting, he was wounded.
On 5 May 1864, at the intersection of Orange Plank Road and Brock Road, the 46th fought in the heavy trees and underbrush. He was shot in the left arm. It must have been a horrific experience for David, as the musketry exploded to their front, let alone being wounded, and having the lieutenant of the company, Thomas Troy, being killed.
Not being able to see the men they were fighting until they were only a few yards from them and the woods catching on fire must have been terrifying for all involved at the “Wilderness”.
After the battle, David was sent to a hospital to be treated and eventually returned to his company in October 1864. He fought in subsequent actions and was eventually captured at Hatcher’s Run, south of Petersburg. He was released 28 June 1865 at Point Lookout, MD, having taken the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
After the war, David return to North Carolina, where he was a laborer and did odd jobs, even working as a shoe cobbler at the age of 77.
He married twice. He first married Francis Adaline Weaver in 1870, and they had at least 10 children. On 14 January 1892, he welcomed a daughter, Callie, who was the great grandmother of Jeffery Clayton. She died during the 1880’s. He married Margaret Russell in 1896.
He passed away 27 June 1926 and is buried in Haw River, NC. Margaret passed away in 1939.
