There is little known about Benjamin Hartwell Starr. He was born in Spalding, Georgia on October 7, 1837. He married Anna Elia Kirk on December 21, 1857.

Benjamin enlisted in Company J, 13th Regiment, Gordon’s Brigade on May 3, 1862 in Griffin, Georgia. It is unknown if he was at the Battle of Chancellorsville or Gettysburg with the 13th.

He was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864. According to family history, “A hole was dug on the battlefield and he was buried by two of his cousins, Wesley Malaier (sic) and John Elder.”
