Army of the Potomac

AlexandHayes Portraiter was born 8 July 1819 in Pennsylvania.  He went to West Pint and graduated in 1844, a year behind Grant.  He and Grant were friends.  He received the rank of 2nd Lt and went to the Mexican War.  He resigned his commission in 1854 and worked as a civil engineer from 1854 – 1860.

In 1861, he reentered the military as a Col in the 63rd PA.  At one time he was a division leader, but by May 1864, he commanded the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Division of the 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac.

He was killed 5 May 1864 near the intersection of Brock and Plank Roads when he was hit by a minie ball in the head.  He is buried in Pittsburgh, PA.
