Special Tour of Mine Run Battlefield

FOWB is pleased to offer a special tour of the Battle of Mine Run to our members on Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM. A second tour will be open to the general public from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM. FOWB members get first chance to sign up, of course! FOWB member and owner of Battlefield Tours of Virginia, John Kanaster, will be our tour guide and he will meet everyone by 7:50 AM for the first tour, and by 12:50 PM for the second tour, in the parking lot of the Locust Grove Town Center. Look for the Highway Marker that talks about the Mine Run Campaign. (It’s by Rt 20 across from the Mexican Food Restaurant.)

Each tour is limited to 22 people, as that is the capacity that the tour bus allows. Sign up is first come, first serve, so please sign up as soon as possible so we can save you a seat! There will be a waiting list, so if you need to cancel, please do so no later than Wednesday, September 20, so the next person on the waiting list can have your seat!

FOWB is picking up the cost of these tours, so please don’t sign up and then not show up! This is a fantastic opportunity, and we are pleased to be able to offer it to you!

John will give you a 15-minute introduction and orientation talk before everyone boards the bus, as that very intersection where you are standing played a significant role in the battle. Please wear sturdy walking shoes and bring a trekking pole if you use one, as we will be doing some limited walking on uneven ground.

There are several good places to eat in the Town Center, if you would like to grab some lunch either before or after one of the tours. The fried chicken at The Market at Locust Grove (inside the Exxon station) is excellent, plus there is a Mexican Food Restaurant, a Chinese Restaurant, a Mama’s Pizza, and a Hawaiian Food Restaurant, so we are sure nobody will go hungry! The Exxon station also has a public restroom if you need one.
